Paul Kan has been with the company since 2008 as Commercial Director. With StudentCom now reaching over 200,000 students via its Digital Media Platform, one of Paul’s key responsibilities is the continual development of the ‘student experience’ with an emphasis on choice and the student journey.
Paul’s functional responsibilities are Product Management, Marketing and New Business Strategies. Born in Liverpool, with a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and an MBA from Kingston University, Paul has worked for over 20 years in the technology industry, spending time with companies such as Mitsubishi, AT&T and Lucent Technologies.
Following a career in hotels and property management Philip Evans established PEX Software a provider of web based enterprise software solutions to businesses within the real estate sector.
Philip also contributes as a board director within the social housing sector and is committed to the transformation of its customer service proposition and to proving new ways of funding affordable housing.
Burton Hamfelt (Montreal, 1964) is architect and owner of Burton Hamfelt Architectuur Stedebouw Prototypes (BHASP) an independent architectural design practice located in Amsterdam.
Since coming to the Netherlands in the mid 1990’s after studying in Canada, Burton Hamfelt was founder and director of the internationally acclaimed and award winning firm, S333 Architecture + Urbanism with offices in both London and Amsterdam. During this period Hamfelt designed and built a number of innovative urban scale mixed used housing projects in the Netherlands and around the world.
Since 2008 in response to increasingly complex questions related to buildings and the urban environment, Burton Hamfelt focuses exclusively on innovative design based projects both independently and in partnership with other organizations. Recent works involves designing and building a number of educational buildings and initiating a number of research based initiatives like, the Campus City Project; a dedicated research laboratory investigating the spatial capital of the knowledge economy and the transformation of the European city.
Most recently Hamfelt has been awarded a startup grant to develop a new form of open source and collective data based 3D urban modeling interface called, ModelMe. In addition, Hamfelt is partnering with Meka Modular luxury buildings on number of modular building based housing projects around the world. Hamfelt has both extensively lectured and taught design studio at a number of leading European universities and was in 2012 Visiting Professor at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto.
New York city 1990 was the start of an international cooperation between John Bosch and Gordon Haslett that lasted till 2000. The office focused on architectural discussion through working on numerous competitions and series of theoretical projects. The office won Europan II, and was shortlisted for the Rietveld Prize in 2001. His designs for realized projects are characterized by their unique character and stark differences in style, such as DIY, a housing project in the north of Amsterdam and the last realized result of the cooperation; the Ronald McDonald House in the Uithof Utrecht. From 2000 on, under the name of Bosch Architects, the international collaboration expanded to offices in Switzerland, Germany and Slovakia. Projects in Holland include City Building in Rotterdam, the urban plan and housing for het Kleine Rieteiland IJburg, Big House in Ypenburg and many more.
Since 2005 John Bosch is partner at OeverZaaijer architecture and urbanism, with 60 employees one of the most successful architect offices in the Netherlands. The curriculum reflects the potential of conceptual thinking combined with large commercial knowledge in projects like the new headquarters for Atradius Amsterdam, realised in 2008, an ecological resort with 21 villas in Spain, Im Vieri, a housing project in Switzerland, Spark a new city for 50.000 inhabitants in Slovakia and a concept for the Olympic Games 2028, called “The Floating Games’ in Amsterdam. Most recent work involves The Campus City Project a design research initiated together with Burton Hamfelt on education and the city.
Rudy Stroink – President Urban Land Institute (ULI) Netherlands.
Stroink has founded TCN (Trammell Crow Netherlands) in 1994. This company has become one of the major real estate development companies in Europe, with an asset portfolio of 600 million Euros and has developed over 1.5 billion Euros in projects. Over 70% is redevelopment of existing real estate. The company had activities in over 7 countries, including UK, South Africa and Russia, the main activities are in the Netherlands. He has resigned as CEO in 2010 and stayed on as an advisor on strategic issues.
Currently Mr. Stroink is active in various public – private boards related to urban development policies a.o.:Chairman of Urban Land Institute Netherlands. Chairman of the commission advising the Amsterdam Region on the programming of offices and business districts. Chairman of the advisory board of the AEB, which is responsible for the financial support of new economic activities of the Amsterdam Region. He advises various public agencies currently on the transition to a new market, including the city of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht.His motto: Real estate development starts with a market sensitive concept and a realistic strategy and does not stop when the building is completed.
Andrea Gerosa – Founder ThinkYoung.Working with and for young people since 2002, andrea started his career at university joining the junior enterprise network.Today he is the founder of a non profit think tank for youth ThinkYoung, a consulting company focused mainly on student housing Kefren Sarl, a series of summer schools for young entrepreneurs and a coworking space for start-ups. Recently andrea has been appointed to the executive board of Rentxpress SA, an agency that enables travellers to rent plug&play accommodation all around the world.
Carolien Gehrels – Deputy Mayor City of Amsterdam On 27th may 2010 Carolien Gehrels was sworn in a second term as vice mayor of the city of Amsterdam on behalf of the Social Democrats (PvdA). After serving a first term (April 2006 – March 2010), Gehrels took the lead in forming a new Amsterdam administration after the 2010 municipal elections. She lead the negotiations on behalf of the Social Democratic Party. As vice mayor she is responsible for Economic Affairs, Art & Culture, Water Management, Monuments, Local Media and Public Companies.
The vice mayor has launched a scheme to attract big, international businesses to the Amsterdam and to improve the city’s business and economic climate. By attracting more than a hundred international businesses every year, Gehrels has secured more than 1,000 private-sector jobs yearly. The City has weathered the international recession in good shape, far outpacing the nation in job growth in the last couple of years. With Amsterdam Metropolitain Solutions
Gehrels is planning to realize a technical institute and attracting leading knowledge institutions and companies conducting R&D in technology.To launch a new technical institute, a consortium of academic and industry leaders will join forces to build a new, world-leading public-private institute that will engineer talent and create new metropolitan solutions. In this proposal, TU Delft, Wageningen UR and MIT form the academic core of the institutePrior to working for the Amsterdam administration, vice mayor Gehrels was Managing Director at Berenschot Citymarketing & Communications – a department of an independent organisational consulting firm with 500 employees in The Netherlands and Belgium. As consultant she developed the successful marketing strategy ‘I Amsterdam’
, which is still actively being used by Amsterdam to promote the city abroad.
Prof. Hans de Wit – Professor Internationalisation of Higher Education HvA Amsterdam, UNICATT Milan
Hans de Wit is Professor of Internationalisation of Higher Education at the School of Economics and Management of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam since August 2009 and Senior Policy Advisor of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam since 2010.He is Director of the Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation at the Università Cattolica Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy.Hans has (co)written several books and articles on international education and is actively involved in assessment and consultancy in international education, for organisations like the European Commission, UNESCO, World Bank, IMHE/OECD. He has undertaken Internationalisation Quality Reviews of a great number of institutions of higher education around the world. He is the Co-Editor of the ‘Journal of Studies in International Education’
(ASIE/SAGE publishers, LA).Hans de Wit is founding member and past president of the European Association for International Education
(EAIE). In 2005-2006 He was a New Century Scholar of the Fulbright Program
Higher Education in the 21st Century.He has been among other Vice-President for International Affairs at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. He has a bachelor, master and PhD from the University of Amsterdam.
Patricia Martinez – President Association of College and University Housing Officers International (ACUHO-i)
Patricia Martinez has served the housing profession for over 20 years. Her career has encompassed both private and public institutions in the United States, primarily in the Midwest and Eastern part of the states. Currently she serves as the Director for Residential Communities at Northern Illinois University, enrolling 25,000 students and housing 6,000.Her current portfolio includes providing vision for and oversight of the residential living component, oversight of over 350 staff, design and implementation of the residential curriculum, staff recruitment and training, student leadership, living learning communities, operations, summer conferences and collaboration in areas of facilities management and planning.Previous experience includes admissions, assessment, Greek life, student activities and academic initiatives. Professionally, Patricia serves as the President of the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I) and will culminate her term in 2014. Previously, she served as the ACUHO-I Finance & Corporate Records Officer, Secretary, member of the Program Committee and Professional Workshops Committee. She has been involved at the regional level as President, State Delegate and Professional Development Chair of the Great Lakes of College and University Housing Officers (GLACUHO) and the Conference Co-Chair of the Mid Atlantic College and University Housing Officers (MACUHO). She served as a member of the ACUHO-I training delegation to Southern Africa in 2009, keynoted at the 2013 Inaugural Student Success Forum at the United Arab Emirates University and most recently spoke at the Southern Africa-ACUHO conference in Pretoria. Patricia is a contributing chapter author to the ACUHO-I Campus Housing Management Book Series.She has a genuine love of and commitment to the student and professional staff experience.
Carlo Ratti – Director Senseable City Lab MITAn architect and engineer by training, Carlo Ratti practices in Italy and teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he directs the Senseable City Lab. He graduated from the Politecnico di Torino and the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris, and later earned his MPhil and PhD at the University of Cambridge, UK.Carlo holds several patents and has co-authored over 250 publications. As well as being a regular contributor to the architecture magazine Domus and the Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, he has written for the BBC, La Stampa, Scientific American and The New York Times. His work has been exhibited worldwide at venues such as the Venice Biennale, the Design Museum Barcelona, the Science Museum in London, GAFTA in San Francisco and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.Carlo has been featured in Esquire Magazine’s ‘2008 Best & Brightest’ list and in Thames&Hudson’s selection of ‘60 innovators’ shaping our creative future. In 2010 Blueprint Magazine included him as one of the ‘25 People Who Will Change the World of Design’, Forbes listed him as one of the ‘Names You Need To Know’ in 2011 and Fast Company named him as one of the ’50 Most Influential Designers in America’. He was also featured in Wired Magazine’s ‘Smart List 2012: 50 people who will change the world’. His Digital Water Pavilion at the 2008 World Expo was hailed by Time Magazine asoneofthe‘BestInventionsoftheYear’. In 2012Carlowasselected with his design office as one of the top three young architects for the ’Premio Fondazione Renzo Piano’.Carlo has been a presenter at TED 2011, program director at the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow, curator of the 2012 BMW Guggenheim Pavilion in Berlin, and was named Inaugural Innovator in Residence by the Queensland Government. The Italian Minister of Culture also named Carlo as a member of the Italian Design Council – an advisory board to the Italian Government that includes 25 leaders of design in Italy. He is currently serving as a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council for Urban Management and is a curator for the Future Food District Pavilion for Expo 2015 in Milan.
Daniel Piazolo – Managing Director IPD Investment Property Databank

Matthias Thomas- CEO INREV
Matthias Thomas is Chief Executive Officer of INREV, the European Association for Investors in Non-Listed Real Estate Vehicles. He joined the association in August 2010. INREV is the leading platform for the sharing and distribution of knowledge concerning the European non-listed real estate industry.Prior to joining INREV, he was on the faculty of the Real Estate Management Institute (REMI) at the European Business School, Wiesbaden. In addition, he was Managing Director of IPD Investment Property Databank GmbH, which he founded in 1998.Matthias has published over 80 articles on various aspects of real estate investing and portfolio management and has contributed to numerous international journals.
Baudouin Delaporte – Head of Residential Investment Gecina.
Baudouin Delaporte, age 37, awarded a diploma by the Essec Business School, started his career in mergers and acquisitions at UBS Warburg and Lehman Brothers. He becomes then in charge of early stage companies investments within the venture capital fund Chrysalead.In 2003 he joins Nexity Apollonia, a major French real estate developer, where he evolves as manager of residential real estate programs then he joins Nexity International where he takes care of the development of the residential activities. In 2008 he joins ING Real Estate Development as deputy development director in charge of mixed real estate programs.In 2010 Baudouin Delaporte joins Gecina as head of residential investments, in charge of the development of the residential portfolio in particular for the student housing franchise Campusea
owned by Gecina. Baudouin Delaporte is a member of the executive committee of Gecina.Gecina owns and manages property holdings valued at over 11.4 billion euros (shares) including office buildings and housing as well as hotels, healthcare establishments, logistic platforms and student residence halls.Created in 2008, Campuséa is the brand for the student residences of the Gecina Group, the only private French operator to both own and manage its property portfolio. Campuséa has 10 residences in operation (representing over 1,400 apartments). Gecina aims to establish itself as France’s leading owner-operator, with a portfolio of 5,000 entirely new student housing units by 2014.

Marcus has been involved in a number of acquisitions and disposals for clients including Berkeley Group, Quintain, UNITE Plc, Opal and Helical Bar Plc. David Chapman – Director General WYSETC
Having trained with a top London and International hotel group, David has worked at some of the best hotels in Europe including Grosvenor House, The Waldorf and the George V in Paris before becoming General Manager of a number of the UK’s leading country house hotels.In 2007, David was appointed Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Director of International Students House in London. ISH is self-funding providing a safe living environment to help young students settle to their studies whilst away from home. David was a Board member of STAYWYSE for four years from 2009, joined the WYSE TC Executive Board in 2012 before being appointed as Director General of WYSE Travel Confederation in 2013. He is also a Chartered Manager and Fellow of the Chartered Managers Institute as well as a Member of the Institute of Hospitality.

Marcel Rasche – Knowmads. I studied Industrial Engineering in Germany in a dual program with the electro technical company Siemens. There I got to know a practical perspective on learning, spending time in internships and application oriented courses. In order to develop further I went on to experience the theoretical side of learning. Therefore I aimed to complete a PhD in Munich. Whilst doing that I quickly found that I still had to answer a lot of questions in order to start up and lead a company (which I aimed to do at the same time) and also generally to take on such a big project. This involved especially facing my fears and taking personal leadership of my own life.To find the answers I joined the Knowmads Business School in Amsterdam. There I found even more than this – I found that learning is about hands (practical) and head (theoretical) but also about the heart (emotional). I found for the first time which strength it can bring to combine these values in education. I found a way to connect to myself and to a truly full life. Finding my passion and daring to follow it. I am enjoying arts and business parallel. I am leading not only my own company but I am leading my own life instead of following a path. Knowmads has shown me what education can really bring. It has changed my life.
Michele da Silva – Sales and Marketing Director Britannia Student Services Ltd.
Michele da Silva is Partner and Director of Britannia Student Services, a leading London student accommodation agency, established in 1997 and catering to UK language schools, colleges, universities and international agents. Michele has been instrumental in turning the company into a full service accommodation provider for London, with the largest database of student homestays, two of its own halls of residence and a variety of shared apartments and houses throughout the capital. The company went on to open a 134 ensuite bedroom hall of residence in Brighton in September 2013. As a marketing professional, Michele’s background includes more than 20 years’ experience in travel and travel related services, including travel insurance. She has held sales and marketing management positions in New York, Hong Kong and Rome and after returning to the UK in 1991, became sales and marketing director of Columbus Travel Insurance and was responsible for business development of the travel insurance arm of BUPA. Currently this platform is used by most universities in the Netherlands, and it is rapidly growing in countries like Germany, Italy, Brazil and more. 72 universities worldwide are connected to this platform. This Rotterdam based online startup company currently employees 15 recent graduates who work on the international expansion of this platform.

Alexandra den Heijer – Associate professor Department of Real Estate & Housing, TU DelftAlexandra den Heijer, MSc PhD is associate professor (chair Real Estate Management) at the Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). She has a background in Architecture (BSc) and Management (MSc). Her specialisation is planning, design and management of university campuses and buildings. She focuses on generating management information for real estate decisions. In the past decade she has developed models and theories that help universities to design and implement their campus strategies and that contribute to creating knowledge cities. All Dutch universities have supported her research from the start. Apart from the Dutch situation she has explored international references and has written many reports, articles and papers on the university and campus of the future, trends and changing concepts and campus strategies.After the fire that destroyed the building of the Faculty of Architecture in 2008 – including Alexandra’s workplace – she could put her theories to the test as member of the team that created a new home (“BK city”) for students and staff in a cultural heritage building, in an extremely tight time frame.Alexandra operates in an extensive network of national and international campus management experts – both in academia and in practice.Her current research project explores (management of) the European campus – in an academic network – to support European decision makers. Focus is the presumed relation between the quality of the physical setting (workplace, ‘univer-city’) and the success of the knowledge economy (attracting and retaining Europe’s knowledge capital).

Bob Crompton – CEO Knightbridge Student Housing UK
Bob Crompton is CEO of Knightsbridge Student Housing Ltd, a company he set up in 2010 with the backing of Oaktree Capital. In the past two years Knightsbridge has acquired over 5,000 rooms in various stages of operation, with another 2,000 rooms under construction. His ambition is to double that in 2014, in order to create a £1billion student housing business with assets across the UK. In addition to this Knightsbridge Student Housing is establishing a presence in several European cities Bob is also CEO of The Student Housing Company, the operating business owned by Knightsbridge. Bob Crompton was formerly CEO of Victoria Hall. He has over 25 years’ experience in the development and delivery of major projects in the Industrial, commercial and residential sectors; both in the UK and overseas , Bob has worked in the purpose built student housing sector for ten years, he is a qualified engineer and an MBA.
Xavier Jongen – Fund Director European Residential Funds, Bouwfonds Investment ManagementXavier Jongen (1970) has over 15 years of experience in international residential markets and over 10 years of experience in the real estate investment management industry. Xavier graduated at the IEP de Paris (Grande Ecole) and holds a post-graduate Master of the College of Europe (with Honors) as well as a post-graduate RICS diploma in Property and Business from the Cambridge International Land Institute (UK). Xavier followed additional training at Fannie Mae, Harvard Business School and the Ayn Rand Institute.Xavier is Fund Director of the Bouwfonds European Residential Fund. This fund also invested in student housing, so far only in France and Germany. Previous to that Xavier worked for ING REIM, first as a senior analyst and later as the associate acquisitions for continental Europe. Before that, Xavier worked for ECORYS, an international research and consulting corporation founded by Nobel Laureate Jan Tinbergen. It is here that he started working on housing market fundamentals and housing market reform whilst working for Worldbank & IMF structural adjustment programs to liberalise previously socialist housing markets in Central and Eastern Europa as well as Russia. From 1996 to May 2005, Xavier also worked as a public speaker for the European Commission in Brussels, where he addressed both broad audiences as priority groups. His experience includes and combines financial, real estate, area developmental and legal issues.
